The 1973 extension of Howard Street between Stadium Drive and West Main Street was a radical change for both the University and the Kalamazoo community. West Michigan Avenue had long been a main artery to and from downtown Kalamazoo.
The 1972 information bulletin (below) from the University Physical Plant outlines instructions for vehicle circulation changes to take effect upon the opening of the Howard Street extension between Stadium Drive and West Michigan Avenue, projected for November, 1973. (A complete description of the recommended routes was on the back of the bulletin, which is not available.) When complete the extension would end at West Main Street to the north.
